The Brimstone is one of the earliest butterflies to appear in spring as the adults overwinter in sheltered places such as stands of ivy. The bright lemon yellow male is strikingly beautiful as he flies amongst the tree trunks of leafless woodland at this time of year. The female is off-white with greenish overtones. The species lays its eggs on buckthorn (Rhamnus catharticus) in calcareous regions and alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus) elsewhere. It is basically a widespread species but in the Rhône département it is only locally common and exists at low density in some areas. Italian buckthorn (Rhamnus alaternus) is used in the mediterranean region.
