This butterfly is very abundant during the flight period. Males are smaller than females and very territorial and will chase off any intruders to their patch. It is easy to tell the sexes apart as the male’s sex brands form a brown stripe through the middle of the upper forewings. This species can easily be attracted into gardens on flowering mint. The fewer individuals encountered in September tend to be females. During mid-August I have observed a female ovipositing. She sits on a grass stem just a few inches off the ground and literally shoots an individual egg below into the grass before moving off for her next shot close by.
