This is the first of several white butterflies which can be confused in the field. However, the Large White is usually distinguishable by its size (especially the female which can be huge) and broad, black wing corners which set it apart from the species which follow. When fresh rape shoots are allowed to grow through after the harvest in the summer the caterpillars ravage the plants and swarms of the butterflies can be seen on the wing. Caterpillars are easy to find under leaves and the chrysalises are conspicuous attached to nearby masonry. Often numerous small, yellow cocoons are observed next to a caterpillar carcass prior to pupation....the work of parasitic wasps. Adults are fond of garden buddleia.
