The Peacock is one of our most conspicuous and beautifully coloured butterflies from the upperside. In contrast the undersides are really very dark, helping with camouflage during hibernation in the winter. It shares many distributional and behavioural characteristics with the Small Tortoiseshell and is thus often encountered with it, particularly through the spring. After the spring though it is commoner than the latter in the Rhône département, cropping up here and there in small numbers except in late summer when a dozen or more can be found nectaring avidly on hemp agrimony, for example. It enjoys buddleia in gardens.
