The Poplar Admiral is a truly magnificent butterfly and it is an immense pleasure to have been able to observe it. It is a very large, woodland species which spends most of its time hidden in the tree canopy. Whilst it is widely distributed in central-western Europe it is seldom observed; the best opportunities occurring when odd males descend to sup minerals from a patch of damp ground in a woodland ride for example. Even then, it is very wary and will rise effortlessly to the shelter of the treetops at the slightest disturbance. The female lays her eggs on aspen.
