The uppersides of the Scotch Argus (particularly the male) are characterised by a more or less 'strangled' effect in the red band on the upper forewing between the upper pair of pupilled eyespots and the lower one in space 2. It looks rather like someone's picked up the band and squeezed it in the middle. On the undersides the main feature is three or four conspicuous pin-prick white dots in the post-discal band. The underside of the hindwing is very variable, especially in the female; her post-discal and basal bands are always paler than the discal band, but there is variation in intensity and colouration from silver-grey to yellowy-brown. The male has less contrast on this surface. Fresh, nicely marked females often have lightly chequered fringes.
