This species is very similar to the Gatekeeper (P.tithonus) but has a much more southerly distribution, prefering hotter climes. From the underside of the hindwing cecilia can be distinguished by the distinctly mottled effect and a strong, white mark in the shape of a 'Y'. From the upperside both sexes are conspicuous by the extensiveness of the orange area on the hindwing which reaches well into the basal area (tithonus is dark in the basal area) and on the forewing the male's sex brand is rather rectangular and characteristically sectioned up by the criss-crossing of the veins (tithonus has a more solid, dark androconial patch.)
