Violet Copper

(Lycaena helle)

29/06/08 Doubs (25)

The Violet Copper is an extremely local and uncommon species flying in damp habitats containing an abundance of its larval host plant bistort (Polygonum bistorta.) At this location in the Doubs the butterfly was reasonably abundant around the fringes of a peat bog where it seemed to prefer sitting on the leaves of small willows.
